Legoland Windsor Removes Sky Rider Ride Without Any Closure Announcement

Legoland Windsor
Saturday 7th December 2024

Breaking news coming in from Legoland Windsor today, it would appear that another ride at a Merlin theme park is being removed without any prior announcement about it being closed and removed.

Sky Rider opened in 1996 and was an original opening-day attraction. Over the past few years, the ride has struggled to open on wet days due to the hills on the ride.

The track for the ride has been cut and removed in the surprise removal of the old ride. Signage for the ride has also been removed over the past week, last weekend the ride remained intact with signage still installed.

On the Legoland Windsor website, the ride has been closed for maintenance since 9th September 2024. The status of "Sky Rider - Closed for annual maintenance from 9th September. Returning in 2025" has been assigned to it for the past few weeks. But when checking today the ride availability page, it's now been listed as "Permanently Closed"

What could replace this old attraction? With the footprint for the ride being very unique it's going to be hard to replace this ride unless they build it again like for like. This is the second ride to be removed from Legoland Windsor in two years, with Vikings River Splash removed and not replaced last year.

It's worth noting that over at Alton Towers, the same ride system is used for Squirrel Nutty Ride / Get Set Go Tree Top Adventure. Is this a sign that the ride is coming to the end of its life span and a refurbishment is needed soon? This ride was also installed the same year as Sky Rider was at Legoland Windsor.
