Located in London, DeathCell Magenta is a thrilling, limited-time-only pop-up escape room featuring live actors, intricate puzzles, and immersive themed sets. Designed by the team behind DeathCell, this new experience offers a fresh storyline that will challenge your mind and get your adrenaline pumping.
The Experience
The adventure begins with participants seated in front of a projector screen, watching a short cinematic film that sets the stage for DeathCell Magenta. Interestingly, this film was shot in a real shop, adding to the authenticity of the experience. The storyline follows Ryan, a shady character in search of a new ‘colour’ to add to his collection—Magenta. By the end of the film, Ryan decides he needs a new set of victims to test Magenta’s game, and that’s where the players come in.
As the film concludes, the DeathCell logo appears, music intensifies, and the screen rises to reveal a hidden door, marking the beginning of the live-action experience. What follows is a heart-racing, 60-minute journey through five uniquely themed rooms:
Workshop
Kitchen
Boiler Room
Crawl Tunnels
Operating Room
Our group was among the first to experience this escape room and managed to solve puzzles in two out of the five rooms. Challenges include searching for keys to unlock padlocks, deciphering numbers in dark corridors, and even navigating a fridge with only a glow stick for guidance. The puzzles are designed to be both mentally stimulating and physically immersive, making teamwork and communication essential.
Highlights & Tips
We had an incredible time at DeathCell Magenta. The set design is top-notch, the music enhances the tension, and the actors are exceptional, adding a layer of unpredictability to the experience. Here are some key takeaways for future participants:
Keep your props! If you're given a glow stick, hold onto it—it may prove essential later.
Communicate effectively. If you find something, inform your team immediately.
Examine everything. Notes on paper, hidden objects in bins—clues can be anywhere.
Expect surprises. The crawl tunnel sequence, in particular, was a standout moment. It was pitch black, and several members of our group were taken—including those with glow sticks! Special thanks to Michael Bolton for helping us escape that intense section.
A special shoutout to @tomridesrides for their humorous take on the experience: “A masked man locked me in a fridge.”
Room for Improvement
While DeathCell Magenta is an exhilarating experience, there are a few areas where minor adjustments could enhance the gameplay:
Time Limits Visibility: Each room has a time limit, but it isn’t displayed anywhere. A visual countdown, perhaps in the color magenta, would be beneficial.
More Hints & Clues: Some puzzles, such as color-mixing challenges, could use clearer written hints on the walls.
Extended Time for Near-Solutions: If a group is close to solving a puzzle, a few extra seconds might improve the flow of the experience.
Better Audio for Magenta: A microphone for Magenta would ensure that all players in the room can hear her clearly.
Finding the Venue & Booking Tickets
For those planning to visit, we've taken a photo of our “Rewind” tape outside the building you're looking for. This marks the entrance, and someone will come to find you. Posters in the windows are expected to be added soon for easier identification.
Tickets for DeathCell Magenta can be booked at www.deathcell.co.uk. The event runs from Friday, February 21st to Saturday, March 1st, 2025, so don’t miss out on this spine-chilling experience!
Final Verdict
Cinematic storytelling, time-sensitive puzzles, and immersive horror come together to create a truly terrifying and unforgettable escape room. Whether you're a seasoned escape room enthusiast or a newcomer looking for a unique challenge, DeathCell Magenta is an event worth experiencing—just be prepared for some unexpected frights along the way! We loved it so much that we’d love to see another version of this pop up again, maybe somewhere close to Staines or another area soon. We can’t wait to see what the creators come up with next!
