Universal Destinations & Experiences has officially announced plans to open its first theme park in Europe, with a groundbreaking new development set for Bedfordshire, United Kingdom. The multi-billion-pound project will transform the former Kempston Hardwick brickworks site into one of the largest entertainment destinations on the continent.

Spanning an initial 476 acres, with the potential to expand to 700 acres, the new Universal-branded destination will feature a world-class theme park, a 500-room hotel, and a dedicated retail and dining complex. Pending planning approval, construction is expected to begin in 2026, with an anticipated opening in 2031.

“This is more than an entertainment investment — it's a long-term commitment to the UK’s growth and a catalyst for regional development,” said Mike Cavanagh, President of Comcast Corporation, which owns Universal. “We’re excited to work with national and local partners to deliver a landmark destination for millions of visitors from across Europe and around the world.”

According to Universal’s early projections, the resort could attract up to 8.5 million visitors in its first year and contribute approximately £50 billion to the UK economy by 2055. The project is expected to create 28,000 new jobs, with Universal committing that 80% of those roles will go to residents from Bedfordshire and surrounding areas.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer welcomed the announcement, stating:

“This is our Plan for Change in action. Universal’s investment will bring tens of thousands of jobs, unlock billions for the economy, and establish Bedford as the home of one of Europe’s largest and most dynamic theme parks.”
The government has confirmed it will invest in supporting infrastructure, including enhancements to Wixams railway station, the development of a new East West Rail station adjacent to the resort, and improved access to major roadways such as the A421.

Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, added:

“This landmark investment is fantastic news for UK tourism, our creative industries, and families across the country who will soon be able to enjoy a world-class theme park experience right here at home.”
Universal conducted an extensive consultation with local residents and organizations, with more than 6,000 participants surveyed and 92% expressing support for the project. The company will continue to work in partnership with Bedford Borough Council and other local authorities, including Central Bedfordshire, Luton Borough, and Milton Keynes City councils.

This development marks Universal’s latest expansion, joining its portfolio of international destinations in the United States, Japan, China, and Singapore. The UK location is the brand’s first major theme park venture in Europe.
