Adrenaline junkies rushed to Blackpool Pleasure Beach today for the grand opening of Launch Pad—a dramatic reimagining of the park’s iconic tower ride.
Formerly known as Ice Blast, the 210-foot attraction has been transformed with a bold space-themed makeover, upgraded mechanics, and a powerful new launch system. Riders are now blasted skywards at 80mph, experiencing intense G-force and weightlessness before a breathtaking drop.
CEO Amanda Thompson OBE marked the occasion by cutting the ribbon at the launch ceremony. “Re-imaginings like this are fantastic for our industry,” she said. “They keep classic rides relevant while delivering new excitement.”
Theme park enthusiasts praised the updated experience. “You can really feel the G-force and the airtime’s back,” said Scott Bickerton of Your Experience Guide. Shawn Sanbrooke of Theme Park Worldwide called it a “full package” thanks to its new soundtrack, smoke effects, and launch sequence.
The overhaul included a new 105 PSI launch cylinder, redesigned seats, vibrant red-and-blue colours, and custom branding. Most of the work was done by the park’s in-house team, with support from U.S. ride manufacturer S&S.
Launch Pad continues Pleasure Beach’s strategy of modernising legacy attractions. Following recent updates to Valhallaand Wallace & Gromit’s Thrill-O-Matic, a new £8.72m Gyro Swing ride is also set to open in 2026.
