We had an amazing time going behind the scenes of Nemesis at Alton Towers, and the experience was nothing short of spectacular. The eye theming piece was a highlight with its three distinct modes—sleeping, angry, and waking up. It's impressive how the eye's LED screen is used instead of a projector, adding to the immersive atmosphere. If any issues arise, a curtain will be wrapped around it to maintain the theme.
Another fascinating aspect was the marketing strategy behind the Nemesis eye balloon. It was inflated specifically for the tour, but it has limitations, such as not being usable in winds over 27 mph. The location for the eye's marketing photos was carefully chosen from several potential spots, and interestingly, the same photographer who shot the Alton Manor London Doll’s House promo handled this project as well.
On the technical side, we learned that a wheel for the coaster can last up to three seasons, showcasing the durability and meticulous maintenance of the ride. The claw grabbing the supports in the plaza will move, though the extent of its movement hasn’t been confirmed yet.
The high-speed smoke machine on the station roof exceeded expectations, creating a dynamic effect where the train drags the smoke with it as it passes. The ride also features a new control panel, which offers a per-seat harness view, and all control panels across the ride have been upgraded. The new mag brakes are another upgrade, helping to reduce maintenance costs.
We also learned about the red bracket on the back of the train, specifically designed for Ride Access Pass users with a harness if they are missing a limb, showcasing the park's commitment to accessibility.
As a fun fact, the code name for the 2024 project was “Relentless,” while the original code name for Nemesis was “SW3.”
Overall, the behind-the-scenes tour was an incredible experience. The passion and friendliness of everyone involved were evident, and we hope the park offers this tour again in the future!
